Obesity
Over 176,500 young adults under 20 years old have one form of diabetes. One in every 400 to 600 children has type one diabetes, according to the National Diabetes Statistics Web site. Diabetes is just one of obesity related health problems among children and adults. Obesity also causes other health problems such as hypertension, heart attacks and high cholesterol. In 2004 obesity related deaths ranked number two, smoking came in first. By 2005 obesity related deaths was expected to pass smoking as the number one cause of death, according to Medscape.com.

This generation will forever be known as the XXL generation. However, the American public wants the next generation to be different and they are prepared to do something about it. Almost every restaurant is now offering healthy options and disclosing their top secret nutritional information. Public schools are replacing soda machines and recreating the cafeteria food. Positive attitudes toward exercise with multiple health benefits are being implemented at gyms. Organic foods and local markets are also giving big chains a run for their money. The main reasons the bill passed was attributed to the need for a healthy work environment and a smoke free zone for consumers who did not smoke.

Learning to manage stress is vital to leading a healthy happy life. You are as unique as your body's reaction to stress, everyone is different. Stress is how the body responds to outside situations and problems. Sometimes these situations become out of control and your body responds by developing health problems or by lashing out emotionally. It is trying to make you stop the stress. You might develop high blood pressure, ulcers, or have a heart attack. Sometimes the response is different, you might be angry, aggressive or overly sensitive. Only by learning to control both the stress trigger and your response to it, will you be able to have complete stress management skills.

Gambling is everywhere. Whether you are betting on a game, playing online gambling, watching the World Series of Poker on TV or spending the weekend in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, where there is gambling, there is addiction. According to PBS.org, 5% of gamblers are addicted. Sure this number seems small. But think about this, PBS.org also reported that in 1997 alone, 87% of people who visit Las Vegas gambled. Of those 87%, 67% played the slot machines. In places such as India, gambling is a main source of income. PBS.org estimates that in 1997 alone over 27 billion dollars a year was made from gambling. That was ten years ago, those numbers and stats only went up. Many people are ok gambling for fun, but others become addicted and obsessed.

There is a fine line between wanting to change something and having low self esteem. Having a negative or hateful view of yourself is associated with low self esteem. Those suffering from low self esteem usually look at themselves and others negatively, lack confidence, and perform poorly. Trying to figure out what percent of the population suffers from low self esteem is nearly impossible as low self esteem is related to many other emotional issues.

The Oregon Department of Education says drop out rates for Oregon are dropping. In 2006/2007 the rate dropped from 4.3% the previous year to 4.1%, which is about 7,400 students which may not seem like a lot for a state, but this number still should cause some alarm. What is even more shocking is the amount of students who study at home. According to NCES.Org, 12% of 4th graders spend one hour at home studying while the number increased to 37% of 12th graders. The numbers may increase as grade levels increase, however that means 63% of 12th graders are not studying at home.

Often the reasons they are obese are due to things largely out of their control. Obesity among the poor can be attributed to many things however the most common are lack of exercise, food choices and no access to health food stores or supermarkets.
