What You Need To Know About Tinnitus

By: JJ Currie

Tinnitus is a common medical condition defined by the perception of ringing of the ears. Millions of people of all ages suffer from this condition. It can produce a sensation of hissing, buzzing, roaring or clicking in the ears even in the absence of sound from an outside source. In fact, when it is very quiet is a time when patients tend to experience the worst symptoms and they may have a hard time sleeping due to this symptom.
What is tinnitus? Some would call it a disease or an illness but this is not really true. Persistent tinnitus is more than a hearing or ear problem. It can indicate a more serious disease such as high blood pressure, anemia, atherosclerosis, or malformation of the capillaries. But those are not the only causes for tinnitus. Meniere's disease, hearing loss due to age, ear infections, a blocked ear canal or allergies are all possibilities, as are frequent exposure to loud noises and even some medications.
What then is the implication of tinnitus not being a disease? One is that there is no cure for it. It might worry us, but if we look at the positive side of things, we must drop all those worries because various treatments are available to help make it bearable. The first thing we should know is that there are natural tinnitus treatments. These are remedies that are practical in a sense that we can do them by ourselves and that we do not have to spend much. One is to avoid going to places that would expose our ears to loud noise. Or when it it is inevitable, hearing protection devices such as earplugs and special ear muffs should be worn. Another is to avoid the aggravating factors like salty foods, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. So if we are lovers of coffee, soda and cigarettes, then perhaps it is time to change our diet and hobbies a little bit. Protein, choline, zinc, vitamins A, B, and E - these are the vitamins and minerals that our diet should be rich in. Proper exercise would also help since it improves blood circulation.
Medical aids like hearing aids and maskers could help us make distracting noises in our environment less annoying if we discover it is too difficult to depend on natural remedies on their own. Help from herbal concoctions for tinnitus are appealing choices because they have no side effects. Some more possible choices would be acupuncture, aromatherapy, acupressure, meditation or reflex techniques. When incorporating stress management therapies, possible choices include, tinnitus retraining, cognitive-behavioral therapy or out counseling.
Besides the items mentioned above, a person should also avoid getting stressed as that causes the ringing in the ears to become worse. Maintaining a positive attitude makes living with tinnitus easier.
