By: Jason Smith

Today in the United States alone, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, around 30 million women are now affected by the problem of hair loss. Although it is common in older women, especially when they reach menopause, it is also being seen in a large numbers of younger women as well. In this article, we will take a look at some of the causes of hair loss in women today.

The main causes of hair loss in women are related to the same factors as hair loss in men. Similar to men, women may lose hair because of age, genetics, or they may have a problem related to hormone levels. Along with these, there are other factors that can cause hair loss in women.

However, below we are going to be taking a closer look at some of the medical causes for hair loss in women today. As long as the right diagnosis is provided by a woman's doctor or dermatologist then this particular health problem can then be treated.

1. Polycystic ovary syndrome is a problem related to hormones and can cause hair loss. It is not uncommon for a doctor to diagnose this particular health issue when a woman is suffering from hair loss, as this is one of the indicators.

2. Another source for hair loss may be if the woman is being treated for some type of autoimmune disorder. In a patient that is undergoing a treatment like this the hair loss can be quiet dramatic and they may find their hair coming out in clumps or patches.

3. There is another medical condition that can cause hair loss in women and that is Telogen Effluvium. This type of hair loss may occur after an event in a women's life alters there hormone levels. Some events that may lead to this are child birth, using a crash diet, surgery, or it could even be something traumatic that has happened.

It is important to note that before you undergo any type of treatment, so that you do not cause the problem to become worse, a doctor should be consulted to find the underlying cause of the hair loss. It is vital to find the primary cause of the hair loss, as such a doctor may need to carry out a few tests to determine this.

Above we have mentioned just a few of the causes of hair loss in women, but it does not mean it will happen to you. However, do not be worried when washing your hair or brushing if you notice a few more hairs than usual falling out this is just a natural part of life and the aging process. Should hair loss become excessive then you should seek medical advice as soon as possible.
