The key to many of life's obstacles is to simply keep motivated. A long term goal such as becoming free of an addiction is a perfect example of how motivation can improve one's general quality of life. But staying clean from a previously held addiction can be tough, and thus, motivation must be quite plentiful as a result.
A recovering addict may have some trouble in finding motivation, but just like many things are taught in life, positive reinforcement can prove to be a very powerful aspect indeed. When one rewards one's self for a good action, there is natural motivation to continue the addiction-free attitude that obtained the reward. This can be as simple as buying luxurious chocolate, or as elegant as obtaining a first class massage.
Staying away from an addiction can sometimes be as simple as keeping stress out of one's life. But for the stress prone citizens of the world, this can be a hard task to accomplish. To take everything that life throws at us, it's best to consult family members and friends when stress starts to get the best of someone. This will ensure that frustration will not force the recovered addict from going back to their old habits of addiction.
Although it can be somewhat expensive, obtaining a higher education is often a great way to stay free from drugs. Many college students are simply too busy to find time for drugs, and that is a great reason for recovering addicts to take up classes. Not only do recovering addicts gain motivation from the fact they are bettering their life, but the time spent on homework can keep one occupied indefinitely, and give old addictions the boot.
When someone is going through a burden alone, it can be quite frightening. But the second that a family member or friend steps in to help, things start to seem a lot better. Like in this example, finding a friend who will stop a certain addictive habit with one's own attempt is a great idea for motivation. One might ask a friend to stop smoking, for instance, and in turn ample motivation will be obtained through the bond.
Keeping records of how long that one has achieved the success of staying free from an addiction is a great idea. Marking out days on the calendar in big red "X" marks is a great visual for those who need some extra motivation. After all, when you meet someone and they say they have been free of an addiction for 5 years, you can probably note that they won't be starting that addiction again anytime soon.
In Conclusion
Motivation is an interesting characteristic of humans that has a lot of power. The power can be harvested to overcome an addiction, as seen in the examples above. The trick is to find more ways that one can be motivated so as to remove an addiction from one's life indefinitely. Only then can one say they are completely free of an addiction, and ready for other problems that life throws.
