Throughout history, women have always had some sort of carrying device, be it a handbag or a purse or something else. Have you ever wondered why this is? The answer may surprise you. It is very complex, and ties into everything that separates a woman from a man. Besides the obvious, of course. In fact, we have knowledge of woman carrying handbags as long ago as 430 B.C. Besides just being a way to carry things, purses (including handbags) have always been important. From the modern classy lady with her Prada handbag, to the ancient witch-doctor and his medicine bundle, there are similarities between every form of bag-carrying. The first part of the reason, is simple and obvious, namely that you need a bag to carry things. Of course, everyone needs to carry things on occasion, but you don't see men carrying a purse. Or at least, not often. The reason for this is that women have, evolutionarily speaking, been the caregivers of the family and were responsible for making sure that everyone had what they needed. More important then this, the woman were responsible for raising children, and so needed ready access to anything their child might require at a moments notice. Then, again, women are the traditional organizers, and often have an obsession with keeping things neatly ordered. The next part of the reason, is the role that the bag plays- one of surprising mystery and power. Because the contents of a bag are concealed, it is left to the imagination to come up with a description of what's in there. Be it the bag of a wizard or a doctor, still, it is filled with items of mysterious and peculiar significance and power, and it endows the holder of the bag with an aura of mystery. They know what the bag contains, and how it works, and we don't. Your average woman, of course, is hardly an ancient and mysterious sage. Her handbag is, usually, not filled with particularly strange items (although many men would disagree), and so it may seem somewhat ridiculous to apply the same mechanism of mystery to her, as to a medicine man or doctor. And yet, her purse does conceal its contents, and it does serve to surround her - at least a little bit - with an air of mystery. So the hidden contents of her bag sets the women apart, and surrounds them with a strange attraction, as well as giving immediate access to whatever she might have need for at the moment. There are two reasons for you, and I'm sure you can guess the third. A handbag is fashionable. Yes, it is really that simple. Women like to be fashionable, and particularly in today's society, that means they must accessorize. More then that, a handbag gives a clear and straightforward indication of the women's place in the world, and her social standing. I'm sure you could immediately gather that the woman with the drab brown handbag is at a rather different place in society then the one whose handbag is covered in glittering diamonds. To give you an example, take a look at Margaret Thatcher. The press has always made much of her use of the handbag, and if you look a little closer, you'll see a marked resemblance between hers and the queen mothers. Is it just coincidence, that these two powerful women should choose the same design? I suspect not. Given what I've already said about the reflection of social standing that a handbag represents, I'm sure you can see that it is entirely unsurprising that they should equip themselves similarly. In conclusion, handbags are astonishingly significant. Closely linked to everything that makes a woman a woman, a handbag enables her to keep organized, appear more mysterious and attractive, and display clearly her social standing. This, then, is why woman carry handbags.
