The Lifelong Rewards of Yoga for Children

By: David T.

Finding new and creative ways to regulate and improve children's behavior in the classroom can be a challenge for parents and educators alike. And all too often, parents and schools, in an act of desperation, turn to medication, and other harsh, suppressive disciplinary techniques to regulate their over-stimulated and overly-stressed children. But there are other alternatives. Progressive teaching techniques, dietary changes, and other pro-active approaches can help immensely with a child's behavior. Physical fitness and yoga for children can also help make a difference in both the home and the classroom setting.

Yoga for children is truly an invaluable tool. With obesity and diabetes on the rise, physical fitness is of the utmost importance, as is the need to combat the negative effects of high fructose corn syrup and other such dietary villains. But yoga goes beyond just physical fitness. It also targets the well-being of the mind and spirit. People are more stressed out than ever, and children are not exempt. Aside from having devastating physical effects, stress can interfere with a child's ability to focus in class, and absorb new information. This inability to concentrate can lead to frustration and low self-esteem. High stress levels can also lead to sluggishness and a lack of positive energy in the child. These symptoms are a recipe for negative, counter-constructive behavior in the classroom and at home.

We are being shown, again and again, that mental and physical well-being are practically one in the same. You cannot remedy one without addressing the other. That is why it is absolutely necessary for parents and educators to find a solution to behavioral problems that works with both factors. Yoga does this, and more. And it is not a problem if educators are unfamiliar with yoga. There is kids yoga teacher training available for the novice interested in incorporating yoga into the classroom. These training seminars last no longer than a few days, and may be taken in one, if time is a concern.

With the frightening amount of aggression, violence, and inappropriate behavior plaguing our schools, and the lack of practical and preventative solutions being employed, there really is no excuse for not learning pro-active behavioral techniques like yoga for children. Kids yoga teacher training is simple, cost effective, and brief, and the benefits are really beyond description. This is not just a remedy for day-to-day misbehavior. This is a preventative tool that fosters physical and mental well-being, self-esteem, effective conflict resolution, stress coping tools, higher grades and test scores, and skills that will remain with the child for a lifetime.

If you are interested in bringing the benefits of yoga home to your child, or would like an audio-visual aid in the classroom, consider investing in a kids yoga DVD. A kids yoga DVD will help simplify poses, and show children how they can apply different yoga techniques to different situations involving excessive stress or conflict resolution. Many of these videos also employ the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, developed by Dr. Howard Gardner, which couples yoga with anything from anatomy and ecology, to language, music, and visual art. Truly a comprehensive resource for your student or child.
