Many people are interested in improving their looks with cosmetic dentistry. But there’s the quandary of what exactly should I have done, what will look best and how will it all come out in the end? Digital Cosmetic Imaging, which shows each patient a computerized split image photograph of his or her smile, takes out the guesswork.

Another new advancement in dentistry is the Digital Bite Recorder. This is a computerized bite sensor that tells the dentist which tooth hits first and the amount of pressure being exerted, digitally. This is used for multiple crown cases. This way every patient gets a stable bite without having to do multiple adjustments.
“There are 1370 cell sensors in the bite recording surface.”, explains Dr. O’Malley. “This recording can be replayed on the computer screen to see the exact sequence of the bite so that I can make the adjustments needed with the work being done. When I use to use articulation paper or waxes, my work was often nearly reduced to guesswork. Now that I see the accuracy of this high-tech device, I know that I can create a stable bite without the patient having to return to the office for future corrections.”
Laser dentistry is used for soft tissue surgery, curing, and sterilizing with the benefit of no anesthetic needed or just topical anesthetic to get started. It is used in his office by the hygienists to kill bacterial caused periodontal disease. The benefit to the patient is that it is more effective and less traumatic than conventional methods because it uses the power of light to vaporize soft tissue without bleeding. The precision of laser dentistry helps the patient heal with the least post-operative pain.
“So you see,” said Dr. O’Malley, “the breadth of uses with laser are amazing. The bite recorder and imaging system are cutting-edge technology at it’s best. All of the high-tech advancements in dentistry are simplifying the work and really creating a whole new field of cosmetic dentistry.”
