Show Me the Money Can Mean a New Profession

By: Jayden Adams

Having a knack for figures, enjoying keeping track of finances or finding it easy to watch the dollars and cents leads many to a successful life through a career in accounting. Southern Californians looking for a profession often turn to National Polytechnic College because of their different career programs, such as the Computerized Accountant Degree Program. This program gives students the necessary training to start a fun, rewarding career in accounting. After completing the short eight-month program, graduates are prepared to begin working with their computerized accountant degree using vital software such as QuickBooks.

As a computerized accountant, there are several career options. One can get a job working as an accountant for a business. There he will keep track of the books, including inputting checkbook data, making invoices to bill customers, and registering incoming bills to be paid. Additionally he might be in charge of the tax documents, payroll preparation for employees, and other advanced accounting procedures. Working for a big-time business or corporation, he will have the opportunity to receive many basic benefits, including paid vacations, health and dental benefits, and a normal, 9-5, Monday through Friday schedule.

Another option that a trained computerized accountant finds is being an independent contractor. This job can be done from one’s home or office, or one can go to his clients’ places of business to do their accounting. As a stationary computerized accountant, one needs to be very responsible for his scheduling to ensure he allots enough time to get all the necessary work done; additionally, he needs to have a computer that has an accounting program and is hooked up to the internet. The upside of this option is that he is able to work out of the comfort of his home or office – no dressing up for work or having to fight rush-hour traffic. His clients send most of the necessary information to him electronically, although some of it is done via snail mail. This is an ideal job for someone who wants to work out of his home or office, as long as he has the self-control to work the necessary hours even though he has no boss calling if he sleeps through his alarm.

The other option for a graduate from this program is being a traveling computerized accountant. This career is very similar to the stationary accountant in that he will have much responsibility and be able to plan his own schedule in accordance with his own preferences. The big difference is that he will be traveling to his clients’ homes or offices. He will have to find clients that are in his area. With this career, the accountant needs to have a vehicle he can drive, but he doesn’t need a great home computer or his own copy of the computerized accounting program, QuickBooks. Another downside to being an independent contractor, namely a traveling or stationary computerized accountant, is the lack of “benefits”. Medical and dental insurance must be funded personally. There are no paid vacations as an independent contractor. He must warn all his clients several weeks before he takes time off; and making sure that all important financial actions are completed before vacation starts.

Overall, having a computerized accountant degree begins a well-paying profession with a variety of options to choose from. If you or anyone you know is looking to start a new career, National Polytechnic College, NPC, is a great place to start this journey.
