Self Defense

By: Jessica Thomson

Self Defense is an action taken to protect one's self against any harm caused to you or your property. In this fierce society, where protection of an individual is susceptible in many situations, we need to protect ourselves quite often from these surprising attacks. It doesn't imply that you take someone's life in your self defense. However, there are alternatives to protect one's self from the attacker without doing much harm to them.
There are different kinds of self defense weapons available in the market that can ensure your safety and protection. Some of the common examples of self-defense products are knives, sprays and firearms can be used for self-defense. Firearm is one of the most toxic self -defense weapon that one can own.
An overview of some self defense weapons is as follows:
Pepper Sprays
Pepper Spray is the most frequently used and easily available self defense weapon around us. It is small, cheap and effective. Oleoresin capsicum or OC is an active ingredient used in pepper sprays. It is an oily resin like material, derived from the hot peppers. Pepper sprays inflict an immediate burning sensation to the skin and the eyes. If inhaled, it can damage the respiratory tract resulting in the inflammation of mucous membrane.
Pepper spray is available in the powder as well as tube form. Pepper sprays are one of the most popular self-defense weapons used today. Remember to use it carefully such that it does not harm you.
Stun Guns
Stun guns works on the principle of disrupting the communication gestures from brain to the body. It is done by releasing electricity to the offender's body. The electricity delivered by a stun gun has a lower ampere electrical charge and therefore it does not cause a permanent harm; it disrupts the functioning of body only temporarily.
When you press the stun gun, a shock is delivered to person's body causing staggered conditions. The electric shock conveyed by the gun coalesces with the electric signals coming from the brain and as a result it confuses the body, making it hard to move.
Personal alarms
A personal alarm is a small portable device that produces strong high pitched sounds to frighten attacker and catch the attention of bystanders. Personal alarms are an effective means to perform submissive self-defense. Personal alarms are available in many different models, including key chains and wrist watches.
Firearms
Firearm is the most critical self defense weapon that can be used. It is also very easy and simple to use. You only need to pull the trigger to harm the person. Firearm can create a lot of trouble if it goes in the wrong hands. Even a small child can hurt someone with a firearm. It can cause serious damage, if used without proper training or guidance.
Self defense does not essentially mean to cause serious damage to the attacker; rather it is more of a precautionary measure.
