When running a business from home it often becomes necessary to create a border between normal activities and work. How strong or weak this border is, depends on the person running the business and the type of work they do.

The borders between work space and living space can be allowed to be non existent when the person lives alone. As the number of people in the household rise the borders automatically have to become stronger.

Living with one partner leads to multiple demands on the rooms, parking spaces and garden area. As children arrive on the scene then it becomes even more necessary to create a totally separate work zone that does not hinder or impede upon normal family life.

The type of work that is done at home can also impact how strong or weak these borders have to be. If most of the work and communication is done via computer and email then a quiet zone might be advantageous but not always necessary.

When the business needs a lot of telephone communication then a barrier has to be created between normal home life and work so that normal day to day noise does not have an impact. These barriers need to become even stronger if the business has a requirement for meeting people in the home.

If valuable or dangerous stock is involved then physical barriers have to be strengthened and must be maintained. Security doors and locks are required to keep unwanted visitors away.

Problems often occur when the business starts to grow. This is when the borders and barriers suddenly start to weaken dramatically as work space starts to overflow into the living zones.

If this becomes the case in your home business then it is now time to look at either adding more business space by building an extension, office in the garden or moving to dedicated business premises.

How strong or weak are your borders and barriers in your home business and what are the factors that have had an impact?
