So you've purchased fitness equipment in the past. You have that home gym sitting in pieces and taking up space in your garage because you need a part that you can't find in order to fix it. And then there's the mountain bike your told your spouse you'd use gathering dust in the garage as well. Jogging hurts your knees and despite of all your previous equipment buying fiascos, you still want to pursue fitness training.
I know it may sound like a waste of good money after previous bad purchases, but have you considered investing in a rowing machine? Not like the one you purchased from a mail-order catalog, a pneumatic piston contraption that felt nothing like real rowing. The one that broke within a week, just like the home gym sitting in your garage. I mean high quality equipment. It's like your mountain bike, but you can use it for just a few minutes while watching TV, instead of getting sunburned outside.
A quality rowing machine will actually give you the feeling that your are rowing on water. They are quiet enough that you can still watch television without raising the volume much and your spouse can still read in the next room without being disturbed. With rowing, there is no impact, so there is no strain on your joints.
But the best part is that rowing is a full-body activity. It uses all the muscles in the legs and back and biceps. Add in a few pushups to work the chest and triceps for balance and you've got a complete workout.
Not only is rowing a full body workout, but a rower can be used to train a variety of energy systems. Need to improve your pure strength? Crank the resistance up to the max and do short sprints. Want more endurance? Turn down the resistance and shoot for time or distance. Feeling competitive? There are rowing machine competitions, which will give you a goal to shoot for while training and help keep you motivated.
Even though money for the best machines is usually money well spent, it is wise to beware of diminishing returns. Spending $1000 on a rowing machine from a brand new company may or may not be a great deal. By purchasing from an established and reliable company, however, you are more likely to be able to find replacement parts when you need them. However, buy used when in doubt. Most people who love rowing would never give up their rowing machines. However, machines sometimes break and the owner doesn't realize it can be easily fixed. You can sometimes get an excellent deal this way.
