Tagging along your pets in one, if not all, of your travels is widely accepted. Package tours now accommodate pets in their itinerary. There are hotels catering to pets and pet owners. This is a good set-up so that they would be able to stay together for the duration of their travel. But prior to making grand travel preparations, be sure to consider your pet's preferences, health status, and other pertinent information. All possible areas should be covered so that both you and your pet enjoy that much awaited travel. Here are some tips on how to better prepare for that all-important trip for you and your pet:
1. First and foremost be very familiar with how your pet usually reacts when riding a vehicle. Animals may also be prone to motion sickness just like human beings. So to be able to have a feel of the animal's readiness to travel take him with you around the neighborhood on you car and watch for a reaction.
2. Visit your veterinarian and explain to him the nature of your travel and the preparations you have been doing together with your pet. Ask for any tips he might be able to impart.
3. Familiarizing yourself with the travel itinerary is a good way to start with. But it is better if you research on it more. Doing so would make you aware of possible destinations and/or activities which your pet may react positively or negatively to. In case you will be staying in a hotel, choose one which is pet-friendly. There are those offering bed, food, and other amenities specifically for your pets. Check for them in your local libraries or surf the internet for options.
4. Your pet, just like a human being, gets comfortable in familiar surroundings. Strange places, place, and/or things might elicit a different reaction from a pet. So to help put your pet at ease, bring with you things or foods you usually give at home. This way, your pet will enjoy the trip more.
5. One hour to 30 minutes prior to boarding, do not give any kind of food or water. Motion sickness was mentioned a while ago and giving food or water may exacerbate that condition if indeed your pet has motion sickness. However, if your pet is relatively fine at the start of the trip, do not give anything until you stop for a meal break.
6. If you have your own car and you are at the wheel, remember to pace your travel so that there will be enough rest periods in between. This is important so that your pet will have time to stretch and relax. You may look for a park within the area. You may also take this time to feed him before another long trip.
Remember:
- Have your pet checked by the veterinarian prior to the trip and ask for a clearance stating the health status of your pet.
- In conjunction with the above reminder, be sure that your pet has received all the shots needed because if not you should never leave without accomplishing this first. Tag your pet for proper identification.
- Just like children, pets should also be securely fastened whenever you take public or private transportation. It decreases the probability of endangering both the pet and the pet owner's lives.
To avoid occurrence of any untoward incident with your pet, be sure to plan your trip ahead not only with your accommodations in mind but also your pet's as well.
