Okay, you have all the beads, now what are you going to make?

By: Terri Batsakis

Beads, beads and more beads. That’s what you see when you walk into a bead store. Log onto any bead website, more beads! Which ones do you buy? What are you going to make with them? How are you going to put them altogether? Where do you start? Your confidence starts to plummet as the overwhelming anxiety of where to start takes over.

If you are just as stumped as the next person, then check with an expert! Check with someone who makes jewellery for a living.

As a new beader you might look at, for example, a reel of wire, and wonder what you could do with it. I offer this advice to you. Simply ask the retailer to show you how to use the wire and give you ideas on what to make.

A retailer who makes and sells their own jewellery, and sells all the beads, chain and findings that they use, are the best people to buy from. That way at least you know where to find all the supplies to make that particular jewellery piece.

A reliable and trustworthy bead retailer will encourage questions and happily give you free advice, if it means traffic to their store.

Beginners, choose a jewellery piece you would like to replicate. Then contact the bead retailer asking them for advice on what beads, findings, or wire you might need to make that piece of jewellery. If possible, ask for step by step instructions; a customer focused retailer, will be more than happy to supply them.

Regular beaders, with your experience and confidence feel free to shop til you drop. Checking out the jewellery piece you want to make will make it easier to select your goodies; you know what you need.

Seeing ideas on what to make, makes it easier to choose what beads to purchase. You can see what size beads are more suitable and puts the size of the beads into perspective.

There are so many beautiful beads out there, you don’t want to buy a kilo of the same style just because they are cheap and have all your jewellery made with the same beads. Look for beads that are sold in small quantities to avoid leftovers you have no use for. That way you can buy different style beads for the same price and make different jewellery pieces.

What you should buy in bulk are the findings. Findings like head pins, eye pins, jump rings and crimps are things you will use over and over again. No matter how unique your jewellery pieces are, chances are you have used the same findings to put them together. So save money by buying these items in larger quantities. Then you have more money available for beads.

Beading can become a very expensive hobby. An honest bead retailer will show you how to cut your costs without cutting your quality. They will share with you their experience and ideas on how to save time and money. They will guide you along with what tools of the trade are necessary and which ones are just gimmicks. The less you spend on tools the more you can spend on, you guessed it, beads!

Beading can be overwhelming to a beginner. An expert bead retailer will take you from overwhelmed and anxious, to excited and creative. Liaise with the experts now.
