The Latest College Grant Information for the 2006 School Year
President George Bush has approved funding for new college grants known as the National Smart Grant and Academic Competitiveness Grant. Around $700 million dollars has been collected just for these grants. The function of the grant money is to encourage students to work towards a degree in the science, math, and technology fields. Both the Academic Competitiveness and National Smart grants are available for the current school year. Each of the grants has their own eligibility requirements. The Academic Competitiveness Grant is given to both freshman and sophomore college students. First year students may be awarded as much as $750 toward tuition fees and eligible sophomore students may receive around $1300. College students could be eligible to receive the Academic Competitiveness Grant if:
They are currently registered as a full-time freshman or sophomore student in a two or four year degree.

They finished a strict plan of study in high school according to the national education requirements and standards.
They maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average during their first academic year. (This applies to sophomore students)
They are a citizen of the United States.
They completed high school later than January 1, 2006 for freshmen and January 1, 2005 for sophomore students.
The National Smart Grant is awarded to junior and senior year students in college. Junior and senior year students are eligible to receive up to $4000. Below you will find the list of current eligibility requirements for the National Smart Grant.
Students could receive the National Smart Grant if:
They are currently enrolled as full-time junior or senior students in a four-year program.
They're qualified to receive a Pell Grant. (College students who are awarded the National Smart Grant may also apply the Pell Grant to help with their college expenses.).
They are an American citizen.
They earned a 3.0 grade point average.
They are planning to graduate in in math, science, engineering, technology, or a significant foreign language.
For those students who aren't eligible for the Academic Competitiveness Grant or the National Smart Grant, there are various other college government grants that are available. Requirements vary based on the grant. Students may be eligible to obtain a college grant based on athletic talent, academic performance, or financial need.
