After you've decided to own and ride your very own motorcycle, you'll learn that it takes some care to maintain the motorcycle at its best condition. This includes both mechanical maintenance and just keeping your bike looking nice. If you put some care into it, you'll enjoy it for a long time.
Washing your motorcycle can be a lot more fun than you may have found washing cars, trucks, or SUV's to be in the past. It can even be a family activity. Maintaining motorcycles so they look as great as they ride is a part of the pride of ownership.
Cleaning doesn't have to be an unpleasant chore. It doesn't even have to be a big one. Making very small efforts every day will allow your vehicle to look pristine with only one or two big efforts (usually just waxing) a year. Take the time to remove mud, road grime and dust. It's easier to do before it has had time to sit for a long time - and you avoid potentially damaging your finish.
New motorcycle owners should begin by finding the owners manual for their specific machine's make and model. If it isn't still with the bike, they are often available at libraries or online. This will have important information about the manufacturer's approved products for cleaning and maintaining your motorcycle.
For a proper cleaning, you will require a car wash or detergent solution made specifically for a motorcycle, as well as a power nozzle for your hose, degreaser, optional polish or wax, and chamois or other soft cleaning cloth. Other equipment you may find useful include a sponge, brushes for cleaning wheel rims, glass cleaner, vinyl/rubber care products and a leather care kit.
While it may seem expensive, a bike, being smaller than a car, will require less, so that a single container goes a long way and you won't need to use as much. Cleaning is less of a chore and a lot more enjoyable if you keep your supplies organized in a handy container.
A motorcycle gleaming like it is just off the lot is a marvelous thing to behold. Everything looks pristine, the metal has that perfect glint, the tires are free of dirt and road debris, and the seat is practically begging for a ride. Despite the hard work of getting to this state, there is much pleasure in seeing these types of results.
The cleaning process should include lubrication of the chains and other areas that require it. Give the bike a quick once over to try to find any obvious problems, and check its fluid levels. A good wax or other product that protects the bike's surface will allow minor blemishes to be quickly rinsed off, making cleaning much easier.
