Marisol Nichols helps celebrate the first anniversary of the Second Chance Center

By: Jayden Adams

Second Chance Center is a secure rehabilitation facility located on the outskirts of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The 600-bed facility is under the direction of drug rehabilitation veteran Rick Pendery who launched the center one year ago. Rick Pendery has thirteen years experience handling substance abusers, including prison-based centers in Mexico, and has achieved very positive results in reducing offender recidivism.

The Center is fulfilling its purpose: providing secure, long-term rehabilitation for substance abusers in the criminal justice system, and then transitioning them back into society so they can lead a stable life free of crime and drugs.

The program used by the Second Chance Center includes a non-medical social detoxification model of rehabilitation based on nutrition, exercise and education. The program teaches self-control, critical reasoning, development of moral reasoning skills, development of life skills, self-esteem, problem solving and coping resources, using four modules, Drug Rehab, Education, Self-Respect Development and Life Skills Instruction.

Marisol Nichols from the hit TV series “24” is currently shooting the film “Felon” in Santa Fe. Ms Nichols took time from her shooting schedule to join the first anniversary celebrations at the Second Chance Center. Ms Nichols, who is interested in the field of criminal rehabilitation, toured the center, spoke with current students and graduates of the program and attended the weekly Graduation Ceremony. She was moved by the positive impact the program is having turning around the lives of the participants.

The recidivism statistics are not improving in the US. According to the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs Assistant Attorney General, Regina B. Schofield, fewer than half of all released offenders stay out of trouble for at least three years after their release from prison, and many of these offenders commit serious or violent offenses while under parole supervision.

“It is time for the judiciary and lawmakers to turn to new solutions”, Pendery urges. “Over the past 25 years, prison populations have grown 377% and prison budgets have increased by 600%. With over $65 billion in tax dollars being spent, it’s time to find effective programs that tackles recidivism.”

After a year in operation, the Second Chance Center is showing it offers an effective, viable solution.

The celebrations continue on October 20th when Academy Award nominated actress Anne Archer will visit the center and attend the Graduation Ceremony.
