Vests have been apart of our American culture.
Importantly to note, vests are not really essential clothing items. Jackets are more functional in offering protection from the elements. Vests on males serve almost entirely as decoration, to fit into a particular group. This is similar to women who wear jewelry to show off their personality, or to show their position in society.
As a luxurious item and one that is durable, leather is often pricey. Indeed, a vest which has been made out of leather is highly prized item. Many people in history have donned a leather vest, this much is evident in its wide use in today's movies. If one wanted to spice up their wardrobe, one buy a leather vest that they connect with.
