Kona coffee gets its name from the locations where it is grown. Only the coffee beans grown on Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa in the Kona Districts of the Big Island of Hawaii can legitimately be identified as kona. No other coffee can rightfully use that term.
Coffee enthusiasts prize kona coffee, which can only grow in a small, select area. In order to flourish it requires the best possible conditions with regard to sunlight every morning, rain in the afternoon, and placid evenings. The precise environment necessary for growth makes the coffee extremely rare.
Kona coffee is rated by its quality and the type of bean or seed. There are two types of seed. Type I is a coffee that has two beans for every cherry; one of which has a flat side and the other which has an oval side. Some examples of type I are kona extra fancy, kona fancy, kona number 1, and kona prime. Type II looks a little different and has only one round bean for each cherry. This type is not as common as type I. Examples of type II are peaberry number 1 and peaberry prime.
You may have noticed coffees labeled as kona blend on your grocer's shelves. These coffees are usually blends of true kona and more common coffees, and the proportions vary widely from brand to brand. In fact, there may only be as little as ten percent of true kona in some kona blend coffees. The remainder is typically Brazilian, Central American, or other beans. In Hawaii, state laws mandate that manufacturers indicate the proportions on the labels. Federal law does not require this however.
This type of coffee is available from many retailer merchants of Hawaii and areas situated outside Hawaii. Besides, you can also find such coffee in local coffee shop or in some restaurants.
