Is Pain Why they are not Going to the Dentist?

By: Jayden Adams

Survey a group of people who have not seen a dentist in a few years and you will find over one-quarter of them either have fear of dentist or have had a bad experience with the dentist, and that is the main reason that they have not made it over to the dental office. People are living day to day worried about deteriorating teeth, maybe in pain or with bleeding gums, perhaps embarrassed to smile. No longer does this need to be the case.

Dr. Paul O’Malley, recently treated a new patient, who had four fillings needed. The patient, JQ explains it like this, “It was one of the most amazing things. The most discomfort I had during the entire visit was using the restroom. (Laugh.) No pain, not even with the anesthetic injection – not a single pinch. Amazing! And actual! Not one time did I have pain when he was working. I felt the physical movements but Dr. O’Malley is a champ. He mentioned that I’ll make it as painless as possible and he kept his word. He was as gentle as he could possibly be and communicated everything as needed – really. “

There’s a new way to anesthetize the mouth for dental work. A Citoject is a pen shaped devise that works to numb only the tooth, not the tongue, cheek, face and lips, making anesthetic injections essentially painless.

“Numbing has always been painful for me.”, JQ’s story continues. “In the past the dentist would numb the area, leave and come back after 10 minutes, and I could still feel. A couple more shots were needed to really numb me but every injection was painful. Even that was annoying. This was mind-boggling – even the initial needle – Zippo! What a technique! No pain – nothing! No time to wait for it to take effect. He began working right away after the injection and I started to freak out because I thought I was going to really feel it. The speed was amazing.”

Dr. O’Malley explains the new process, "It’s the rate of delivery of the anesthetic that causes the pain of an injection, not the needle. Before the Citoject, few dentists would be painless using conventional methods,. However, with the Citoject, by controlling the rate of delivery of the anesthetic solution patients feel only a slight pressure, no pain.”

Dr. O’Malley’s office schedules one patient at a time, so that they can give the highest quality of care individually to each patient. This too, impressed JQ, “I got instant service - extremely A to B. Instead of taking one and a half hours it was forty-five minutes. I have to say it was like brushing my teeth to get those four teeth repaired. I’m glad I came here.”

The X-ray procedure is also tempered and simplified with the use of digital X-ray equipment. There is no long wait for the X-ray to be developed, it takes only a few seconds for the image to appear on the computer screen. Using digital X-rays one has the ability to magnify, colorize, and alter the density of the image. With digital X-Rays not only does the patient receive 90% less radiation than conventional X-rays but this computerized system allows e-mailing of X-rays directly to another specialist.

Dr. O’Malley also uses IntraOral Cameras, which are pen-shaped cameras that he can utilize to show patients clearly each tooth and gum surface in the mouth. These help to reveal to the patient dental problems or to see his mouth as progress is made.

Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, Dr. Paul O’Malley, previously led the field of cosmetic dentistry in West Texas for 15 years then relocated to Southern California seven years ago, totaling 22 years of polished skills creating beautiful smiles. Dr. O’Malley is located in the dental offices of Beverly Hills Cosmetic Dentist, Kourosh Maddahi at 436 N. Roxbury Drive, Suite 202 and can be reached at 310-888-7797.
