Ignatius Piazza Calls for Firearms Training in Schools

By: Jayden Adams

Ignatius Piazza has been horrified and disappointingly aware of the problem which has faced American schools for several years in the form of student shooters. To Dr. Ignatius Piazza, the idea of a child - or anyone - entering a school - or anywhere - and opening fire on his classmates and students is particularly horrifying. While anyone in their right mind would be dismayed and horrified by such an act of thoughtless violence, it affects Dr. Ignatius Piazza particularly strongly because he is the founder and director of the nation's leader in firearms training - and safety and control is his number one aim. As the founder and director of Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, the nation's largest, most successful gun training school, Dr. Ignatius Piazza doesn't put up with gun mishandling.

At Front Sight, gun safety is the watch word: anyone caught not utilizing the safety lessons that are literally drilled in over and over is re-drilled and made to understand the absolute simple necessity of gun safety. Front Sight's students are so well-trained and understand the importance of gun safety so well, it is all but inconceivable to one who has spent the last decade of his life around safe, intelligent, trained gun users to imagine a child opening fire on peers and elders. Dr. Ignatius Piazza, therefore, is particularly affected by the shootings, and therefore particularly bent upon solving them.

And he and Front Sight have made large steps to doing just that. For Dr. Ignatius Piazza came up with the solution several years ago: it was the answer that seemed most obvious considering the available options: train and arm the teachers. This answer does not come without reasoning or precedent, however.

Teachers are the first line of defense when it comes to school shootings. According to experts and analysts, the only people who see enough of the potential student shooters on a daily basis are the student's teachers. The teachers can see the warning signs which can eventually lead to a shooter, and therefore can also help prevent it should the student get to the point where he or she is going to attempt to open fire.

Also, if fully trained, a teacher could effectively handle a student shooter without putting the lives of the other students at risk. Dr. Ignatius Piazza does not support handing out pistols, he fully expects the teachers to receive top-notch training, above and beyond average handgun training. Students are at risk of being shot if a student is going to be carrying a gun, that risk is not increased if there is a fully trained, armed, responsible teacher taking care of them.

The precedent lies with Israel in the 70's. About thirty years ago, Israel was faced with a very serious problem of school shootings - terrorists were entering schools and opening fire upon the students and teachers, often killing scores before taking their own lives or, worse, getting away. Israeli lawmakers searched for a long time for a viable solution to the problem and finally came up with what they have had implemented since then: a full training and arming requirement for all teachers. All teachers and adult aides must wear a semi-automatic pistol on their person. Since then, school shootings in Israel have plummeted, to 0.

Dr. Ignatius Piazza and Front Sight Firearms Training Institute make a strong argument for why we should arm our teachers. Add to that the fact that Dr. Ignatius Piazza is willing to pay for any 3 teachers from any and all school districts in America to get trained at Front Sight for free, and you've got a plan that can't be beat! Every teacher should be trained and armed, but to get the program started with three certainly isn't bad. Dr. Ignatius Piazza and Front Sight should be applauded for their patriotic actions.
