Human Hair Extensions Tips and Advice

By: Robert Melkonyan

Hair extensions can be added to your own natural hair to add length, volume, and body. They can also be an easy, non-chemical way to add highlights or lowlights. Hair extensions can be a one-night change or one that lasts six months.

Hair extensions come in many different types. There are differences in the way hair extensions are prepared, in the technique used to attach it to your own hair, and in what kind of hair is used. Some systems only differ from materials that are used or just from name. With many techniques some kind of glue or bond is used for attachment, these methods involve coating your own hair with a chemical or foreign substance. Some glues can be harmful for your hair or skin, others are safe. Ask your stylist what type of glue will be used & request a patch test and/or trial extension to assess your compatibility.

There are many good salons that do not use a name brand extension technique, but this does not ensure adequate training & health & safety procedures are in place. Hair extensions will not last forever, sometimes because the attachment breaks but mostly because of the growth of your own hair. Extensions connected to your hair will get more loose as your hair grows (approximately 0.4" per month). Depending on how fast your hair grows and how well you take care of your extensions they have to be removed or retightened when they get too loose.

Some systems last longer then others but in general anywhere between 2 and 6 months is normal. It can be possible to reuse the hair to save further expense, this also depends on the hair quality & how well they have been cared for.

There are three major categories: Strand by strand, wefts, and clip-on extensions. These all vary dramatically in cost, so it is essential to have a consultation appointment to not only assess costs, but as with all hairdressing services, to ensure the salon is the right one for you. Any salon worth it’s salt will give you a free consultation – this is the time for you to decide if the salon is right for you. Take some hair pictures from magazines to help describe the look you are after & do listen to the stylists advice regarding your requirements.
