We spend most of our time in buildings -- homes, schools, offices, and stores. But most people hardly notice details about the buildings, such as how they are designed, how they are built, and how well they are maintained. Details such as these make us enjoy a building more than another and even influence the costs of the building if for sale.
An "energy-efficient" is more comfortable than a building which does not save energy. A building which is properly made and energy efficient will need less energy to heat up and cool off, depending on the time of year. This can mean only one thing: in time you end up saving a lot of money with a energy efficient building. A building which does not save energy will cost you tones of money. Why? Because it is trying to heat and air-condition the outdoors as well as the indoors, wasting energy this way.
This activity turns you into an instant building inspector. Your assignment is to identify whatever helps or hurts energy conservation in a specific building or even your own home.
At the completion of this activity, you should be able to identify the major construction, maintenance and design features that make a building energy efficient , define and use each of the vocabulary terms which you can study online and learn so that you are able to use them properly if you, at some point, want to take into consideration making a career from this , explain energy saving steps to a homeowner.
All you need for doing all of these things is the ability to make observations and to record them. You should use as materials 2 vocabulary sheets (name them: „heat bandits” and „energy savers”) and 2 energy audit data sheet (for the interior and for the exterior). You can also improvise a draft detector by using the following materials: pencil, tape and tissue paper or a very thin plastic. This way your credibility will also have to gain and your performance will be much more perceptible.
You have to follow the next procedure and steps:
1. Go over the two vocabulary sheets and discuss them with the home owner. Make sure he understands what you are after so maybe he can help.
2. Make a draft detector to use during your energy audit.
3. Using the Interior and Exterior Data Sheets, complete the observations on your house, apartment, or the building. Use the draft detector to help locate air
infiltrations.
4. Develop a set of recommendations for improving energy conservation in the house, apartment, or building that was studied. List alternative whenever possible, so that the owner has choices in making conservation improvements.
You will probably get a set of questions at the end of the home energy audit from the owner which you have to be prepared to answer. They are not so difficult:
1. How many of the items on the Energy Savers list are inexpensive and easy to install?
2. Will the repair of the house cost and if so will it be worth spending?
3. If the homeowner had only a limited amount of money, what energy savers do you think would help most for the least money?
