It's hard to believe that there was a time when there was only one way to watch a TV show: with your television set. Your options were limited to one of three networks who dished out safe and dumbed down programming to the masses.
If this is your current situation, you might try some of the methods outlined here on how to watch TV on the computer.
1) One approach to watching TV on the computer is to download the entire movie for free onto your hard drive using BitTorrent networking. BitTorrent networking is a form of Internet peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing and is a popular way to share movies on the Internet.
In a peer-to-peer network, the file containing the movie is split up and the pieces are distributed among the different people in the network that want to download the file. Then everyone in the network supplies each other with the various missing parts that they each need until everyone has all of the parts of the file.
The original intact movie that made the whole process possible was supplied by a person known as a seed. In order to use P2P networks for downloading movies, you first have to install what is called bitTorrent client software onto your PC.
BitComet is a client software that's been around for a while and is more than adequate for the job. Next, use a torrent search engine such as torrentz.com and enter a search query related to the movie you wish to download (like 'Clint Eastwood').
When you get a search result that you like, click on the link. You will end up at a page with the title of the movie and a 'Download Torrent' button or link.
Click on this and the download will commence. When the transfer is finished, it is your turn to become the 'seed' and to allow other users to share your complete file.
By leaving your torrent client software running for a couple hours, you will 'seed' the next round of downloads. This is just a general description of the overall download process with some details left out.
It's important to know that copyrighted material cannot be downloaded legally. People have been prosecuted for illegal downloads using P2P.
2) Want to transfer TV shows from the television set to your computer? Try using a USB TV tuner. This device is external to your laptop or PC and can be simply connected to your computer and television.
This is very different from the TV tuner card which must be installed inside your PC. TV signals from the output ports on your television are transferred into the input ports of the USB TV tuner.
The signals, which are modified by the USB TV tuner are then sent to your computer's USB port. Most USB TV tuners allow for fast forwarding, pausing, rewinding and storage of your television programming.
Some models will also allow you to burn TV shows to DVD. The price can vary from $50 to $200.
3) One quick and simple way to watch TV on the computer which doesn't involve hardware or steep learning curves involves downloading specialized software. This software allows you to access thousands of streaming TV stations that exist on the Internet.
The basic requirements are minimal: a computer, a fairly quick Internet connection and some common and free media players. The only other requirement of course, is the software itself. The price can range from $50 to $100.
So now you have information on what is out there and how to go about getting it. Next step: go get it! Hopefully, this article has made very clear, the entertainment opportunities that are there for you to take.
