There's nothing very pleasant about finding out that your child has got head lice. When it happens just take a deep breath and decide how you're going to get rid of the parasites. You have the choice of proprietary products or home remedies. After choosing which one to use you then have to get your child to cooperate with your chosen method of treatment. Those of you blessed with a placid, cooperative child will have an easy time. If you're like most parents though, you'll need to pacify your offspring to get them to sit through the applying, waiting and combing that goes with treating lice. Cooperation seems to rely a lot on factors such as the age of the child and whether or not you have a girl or a boy. If your little one is a turbulent two year old who is going through the 'no' stage then you'll have the most difficulty. The older the child is the greater the chance to reason with them. Whatever you do don't let the treatment become a battleground. It's something that has to be done. And it will have to be repeated at least once more after the initial treatment. Keeping things as calm as possible is the key. The first step is to explain to your child what's going to happen and why you have to do it. Try and keep it all very light hearted and if possible make jokes about it all. Don't refer to lice as dirty or nasty as you may end up frightening your child rather than encouraging them. If you've had lice as a child tell them all about it. If you've decided to use an over-the-counter treatment there may be only a 10 to 30 minute wait after applying the product before it is rinsed out. Using a CD of stories is a good idea or why not play some songs that you can both sing along too. Singing loudly and badly will help keep the mood light. Many other treatments, especially ones based on home remedies, involve keeping the hair covered for several hours. It's actually easier for both of you if they have keep their hair wrapped all night while they sleep rather than just for two or three hours during the day. If you've decided on a treatment that involves keeping the hair covered for only a couple of hours you'll need to do something distracting that isn't too boisterous. Treatments like mayonnaise or olive oil can leave difficult to remove marks on your furniture if the head covering comes astray. Having a meal, watching a DVD or doing some crafts or painting can help fill in the time. Make sure you plan this bit in advance to maximise the distraction and minimise the mess. Whatever head lice method you use there will be combing involved. A lot of kids aren't keen on having their hair combed even when there are no lice involved. Working quickly but methodically is the key and try not to stick the teeth of the comb into the scalp if you want to avoid loudly voiced complaints. Counting the number of lice you comb out seems to fascinate a lot of children and turning it all into a game is a good solution.
