The present day to day lifestyle of humans is causing a lot of problems to the delicate ecosystem that is the earth. The cutting down of trees, contaminating the atmosphere, and the generating of non-renewable wastes in huge amounts are playing havoc to the nature.
These activities threaten to ultimately affect our own existence on this planet. Startling revelations revealed by scientific studies have linked the changing climatic patterns across the world to global warming. The slow increase in atmospheric temperature has made it clearer that catastrophes are waiting in the wings, especially if things go on like this for another decade or so.
Even though the debate is still going on as to who’ll pull the plug first, it is good news that nations are taking the issue more seriously now, and things have at last started to move in the positive direction.
The current situation that we are in is the collective responsibility of all the nations, and at a more micro level, its people. Hence, the solution also must start from us, the people.
Following green living principles is a perfect way to contribute towards the bigger goal of a sustainable earth. A green and sustainable home not only caters to one’s own housing needs, but also lets one do that in a more eco-friendly way.
By building a green home, you’ll reduce the expenditure of power, generation of non-renewable waste, air and environment pollution and the like – all the while not compromising on your quality of life.
This can be achieved through using eco-friendly materials for construction, preferably procured from local sources to reduce transportation needs, by implementing a power saving electric design and by using power saving appliances, using biodegradable cups, bowls, and carry bags, reducing the dependence on automobiles for transport (using a bicycle or walk instead), and more importantly, cultivating vegetables on one’s own backyard, rather than buying it from the stores, in an organic way rather than depending upon harmful fertilizers that’ll spoil the natural environment irreversibly.
Regarding home concepts, green homes can be earth sheltered homes designs or the innovative subsurface homes where the temperature remains fairly constant, thereby eliminating any need for artificial heating or cooling during winter and summer respectively. Green roofs and walls add more to its environment friendliness.
Further, by setting up solar panels (and solar powered appliances) to generate power, the reliance on ‘power by wire’ supply can be reduced sizably. Since power generation, other than nuclear and hydroelectric power, is the main source of greenhouse gas emission all over the world, this’ll be a big step towards containing global warming.
The biggest plus with methods such as organic cultivation, water conservation, and solar energy generation is that these methods are very much sustainable, when taken in a practical sense. People can switch to these eco-friendly methods permanently without affecting their quality of lives.
However, it is important that people collectively use such techniques. For everyone know that only one person making these changes is not going to make any significant difference, given the conundrum we humans find ourselves in at present. What is required at this moment is a mass change in attitude of people, and this can only be achieved through better awareness regarding the issues our earth and ecosystem is facing now.
As it is said “practice what you preach.” Begin by making a green and sustainable home for you and your family, and spread the message to other like minded people for it is our duty to make our earth a better place to live, for us and the coming generations.
