Getting the Basics, Then the Theory and Then the Practical Experience

By: Jayden Adams

So you want to have a good life and everyone says you need to get a good job, learn a profession, if you want to be more successful. You go to the library and go on the net and check out your options. There are a lot of colleges and universities and a lot of choices, but it’s hard to tell which one is right.

So you look at the descriptions of the courses they offer and find that NPC – National Polytechnic College has some interesting programs. They don’t just tell you about what you need to know, they actually get you to do it. They set up a whole new building just to be able to do that. So for example, you need to learn how to keep records for a dentist – then you get sat down with a computer and you actually do it.

Each one of NPC’s programs is like that – if you’re earning computerized accounting degree then you actually use QuickBooks and other software and get familiar with it once you’ve gotten some basics of accounting under your belt, as well as all the computer skills you’d need. You learn about taxation, finance, accounting in a way that could be used in businesses like law firms, insurance agencies, hospitals or even for the federal government.

Another example, the computerized office assistant program gets you set up with the basic math skills for basic accounting, how to do 10 key, how to do financial reports. But first they set you with using the software to do letters, reports, databases, all of it hands-on, so you have your basics and get in there working like a pro.

With the medical and dental assistant degrees you learn all the administrative skills and you also learn how to work in the clinic. So, if it was dental, you’d get clinical experience working with a dentist whilst he was working on a patient! You’d know how to do all the record keeping, how to work with the patients on reception, schedule them, get them billed and order dental supplies. In other words you’d be all set with your new profession.

They even have a program for a massage therapist – you learn about the body and then how to work with it, the key massage techniques (Swedish, Deep Tissue, Sports…), and then get experience doing it and then get to do an externship, professional experience off the campus. So you get set up for a profession you could do on your own time, when you wanted or even on a cruise ship going round the world, working in the spa!

NPC programs look like something I could use, you figure. So then you find out their classrooms are set up for small classes, so you can get all your questions answered and sort out anything you don’t quite understand. You also find out that they have financial aid, work with a lot of community programs and have job placement services. NPC - National Polytechnic College and me – where a better future begins.
