Jerry Colangelo, majority share-holder of the Phoenix Suns in the fall of 1995 applied for a Major League Baseball expansion team and on March 9, 1995 he was awarded the franchise to begin the play for the 1998 season. The Diamondbacks played the first major league game against the Colorado Rockies at Bank One Ballpark in front of a huge gathering of more than 50,000. However, they lost the game.
In the first five years since their inception, the Diamondbacks have won three divisional titles in the year 1999, 2001 and 2002 and a World Series in the year 2001 where they defeated the New York Yankees and became the youngest expansion franchise to win the World Series in only fourth season of their play since inception. In 1999, the Diamondback won 100 games and won the National League West. The Diamondbacks won the NL West in 2002 but were defeated by the Cardinals in NDLS and eventually returned to the NDLS in 2007 where they emerged victorious defeating the Chicago Cubs.
The 2004 season witnessed the downfall of the Diamondbacks where they dropped to the record – the worst in Major League Baseball" Major League Baseball that year and also set one of the 10 worst records in the 100 year history of MLB. 2005 saw improvement where they witnessed a 26 game improvement over the previous year. The year 2006 failed to improve their performance wherein they stood fourth. The year 2007 saw the Diamondbacks with some changes in the uniform design and color scheme where the original colors were dropped for a reddish color - Sedona Red. The same year witnessed a young team comprising of Brandon Webb, Conor Jackson, Stephen Drew, Carlos Quentin, Chad Tracy, Chris Young, Miguel Montero, Mark Reynolds and Justin Upton. Overall the season was a success for the Diamondbacks.
