Appendicitis is a digestive condition and means the inflammation of the appendix, a tube of tissue that extends from the large intestine. It is known that the function of the appendix is a mystery but one thing is sure: humans can live without it. It is also known that appendicitis is a common digestive condition that affects humans for many centuries. The good thing is that nowadays the outlook for patients that develop appendicitis is generally excellent. The mentioned hollow tube called appendix is located at the beginning of the large intestine and it is filled with bacteria. As any other condition appendicitis develops its symptoms. The most common symptoms of appendicitis begin with a dull pain around the umbilicus that travels in the right lower portion of the abdomen becoming a steady pain. Other common symptoms that occur especially at the beginning of the appendicitis are nausea or vomiting, fever, pain during walking or coughing. Along with these common symptoms a patient could develop many less typical symptoms. The two main reasons for developing this kind of symptoms are the position of the appendix and the limited ability of the intestines to feel the pain. The first reason, as we said before, is the fact that the appendix can be found in many different positions in the right lower part of the abdomen. The second cause is the fact that the intestines along with the appendix do not have a great ability of sensing pain. The main sensation that is given by the intestines is the stretching of the wall. This is caused by swelling or distension that occur only when there is a blockage or when the intestines are full. The condition mentioned earlier is sensed as an easy cramp it the different areas of the abdominal cavity. Totally different from the intestines, the membrane lining the abdominal cavity, known as peritoneum, can sense any ordinary pain. When the inflammation penetrates the intestinal wall the pain is felt at its precise location but in some cases the inflammation is shielded from the abdominal wall by the intestines and the patient will experience a minimal localized pain. It is good to know that appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes blocked either by swelling of the intestinal lining or by a plug of stool. In time, while the infection progresses, the walls of the appendix will be penetrated leading to severe pain in the right lower portion of the abdomen.
