Front Sight could have saved Monica-Thomas Harris

By: Jayden Adams

Front Sight Firearms Training Institute could have saved Monica-Thomas Harris, a West Covina woman, when Los Angeles County prosecutors failed to inform her about a plea deal in December, allowing her estranged husband to get out of jail. This is even after he pleaded guilty to threatening her with a stun gun. Curtis Bernard Harris, 34, kidnapped his estranged wife, Monica Thomas-Harris, 37, and shot her with a firearm before killing himself.

Front Sight is a firearms training institute run by Dr. Ignatius Piazza. Front Sight offers advanced training for the individual who already possesses firearms training, to the individual unfamiliar with the world of guns. Dr. Ignatius Piazza thought he was the former, until one day a random shooter went on a spree in his neighborhood, shooting through three houses, one of which was his own. The idea occurred to him that had he had some training on how to use the guns stored away in a cabinet in his residence, he could defend himself and his family, if he had to. Fortunately, the shooter that inspired Dr. Ignatius Piazza did not enter any houses that night, because even though guns were in his house, Piazza did not know how to use them to defend his family. His desire to know how to safely and correctly use his firearms to keep himself and his family safe started him on the path that eventually became Front Sight Firearms Training Institute. His voyage led him to explore different teaching techniques and course designs within, and outside the realm of the firearms training industry. The more Dr. Piazza explored how to learn and teach using weapons constructively, and to develop his plans for the ultimate firearms training institute, he learned that self-defense weapons training for the private citizen, just like Monica Thomas-Harris, was just not available.

Many people like Monica Thomas Harris could benefit from the knowledge of how to properly use firearms for self defense, and Front Sight is attainable and beneficial to those in need of such training.

This was not the first time that Curtis Harris had terrorized his wife. In the past, he reportedly threatened her with her life. About the same time as the divorce filing, Thomas-Harris and members of her extended family were granted a temporary restraining order against her ex-husband after he allegedly threatened her and broke windows at her home.

Last November, Harris took his wife from a West Covina park and handcuffed her to furniture at a nearby hotel, according to West Covina police. She did not report the incident right away, believing it would not happen again, police said. Two days later, Harris showed up at his wife's workplace in the City of Industry, somehow bribed her into his car, and bound her with duct tape and threatened her with a stun gun, police said. She escaped and reported both incidents to police, leading to his arrest Nov. 19.

Had the perpetrator known that his ex-wife owned a firearm and knew how to use it, he may have thought twice about attacking her. Front Sight offers many courses to fit the individual needs, including defensive handgun and empty hand self defense training in 2-day or 4-day training options. The instruction staff is the finest, top notch staff in the industry, offering their talents to citizens who have a desire to defend themselves against random violence, or from those who are repeat offenders.
