Front Sight Firearms Training Institute Raises Call: Arm the Teachers

By: Jayden Adams

Front Sight Firearms Training Institute has been declaring its support of the idea to train and arm school teachers for years. Almost since the very first school shooting, which rocked the nation nearly a dozen years ago, the founder and director of Front Sight, Dr. Ignatius Piazza, has demanded people understand the importance of training school teachers in defensive handgun training and arming them. Unfortunately, not until recently has the hue and cry been picked up by other speakers and writers. Though now it has. The news lines find themselves inundated with reports from all across the nation of reporters and writers who are sick and tired of people thinking that the problem will simply disappear on its own.

Front Sight Firearms Training Institute is the nation's largest gun training school. As such, when the founder and director, Dr. Ignatius Piazza, holds press conferences regarding gun safety and gun control in schools, people listen up. It's not until recently, however, that there has been a large amount of support for his, oft considered extreme, views. But now that a small bit of support has appeared, more and more is flooding in. Truly, when it rains it pours!

Dr. Ignatius Piazza has said for years that he is so certain that the answer to ending school shootings lies in training and arming teachers that he is willing to train any three teachers from all school districts in America. For years, teachers and school districts have taken advantage of his offer and gotten free, world-class training to keep themselves and more importantly their students safe.

Now take Larry Elder, a syndicated radio talk-show host and author. Says Elder, "[I]n some school shooting cases, guns helped to end shooting sprees and minimize loss of life and injury." Elder then cites three incidents: Edinboro, Pennsylvania; Pearl, Mississippi; and Grundy, Virginia as places where school shootings were either stopped or ended early through the use of another person's firearm.
In Edinboro, a 14-year-old middle school student opened fire on a school dance at a restaurant. He killed a teacher and wounded two students and another teacher before the owner of the restaurant drew his own shotgun and went after the shooter. Upon seeing the shotgun, the 14-year-old dropped his weapon. In Pearl, a 16-year-old sophomore killed two students and wounded seven before the assistant principal got to his truck and retrieved the .45 automatic he keeps there. Holding the gun to the shooter's neck, the man kept the shooter subdued till officers arrived. In Grundy, a law school student shot and killed the dean and a professor. He then went on to shoot four students, killing one. Two students heard the shots and retrieved their own guns from their vehicles. With guns aimed at him, the shooter dropped his weapon and surrendered.

These are all prime examples of precisely what Dr. Ignatius Piazza supports and demands from America: responsibility on the part of responsible gun users. Front Sight Firearms Training Institute trains users to be effective, responsible gun users, and if these individuals had been trained and armed, the deaths may never have occurred.

Dr. Ignatius Piazza has found supporters across the nation in his demand that school teachers (and everyone for that matter) get firearms training, it's time for America to shape up and get the training that will keep us and our children safe.
