Free Cross Stitch Patterns Are The Way To Go.

By: John Wigham..

Starting a new craft can be exciting, but it can also be expensive. You probably don't want to go out and spend a lot of money on materials since you might not even like the craft after you try the first project. What's a tentative crafter to do? Find free cross stitch patterns, either online, in books, or in magazines, to save yourself some of the expense.

Let's start low tech and visit your local public library. Library books are classified according to the Dewey Decimal system and a good place to start would be section 746, the textile arts books. Numerous books have been written over the years on all types of embroidery and needlecraft. I would suggest you borrow books that cover a range of needleworks in addition to those specific to cross stitch.

Older cross stitch books will have simple patterns to help you learn the basics. They also include definitions and explanations for some of the more obscure cross stitch stitches like the Algerian Eye or the Spider Web Rose Stitch. The information in the books alone makes them worth your time and effort to read them.

If you can't find a chart you like in a book from the library, peruse the magazine section. They may have magazines such as Just Cross Stitch, The Cross Stitcher, or Cross Stitch Collection. While you may have to pay for the magazine, the patterns are more up-to-date than many books you may be able to find.

Major crafts stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby are also great places to look for free cross stitch patterns. These stores often place free instructions for projects throughout the store, so make sure you look carefully around the cross stitch section. You might just find the exact pattern for your first project. And, you can purchase your thread, needles, and hoops there, as well.

Have you thought of using the internet to search for free cross stitch patterns? Use your favourite search engine and you will discover designs on every subject you can think of. Designers often give away free charts online to tempt you into buying their products.

Many people love to cross stitch and you might love it too! Check out your library, your local discount and craft stores and the internet. When you find your cross stitch pattern for free, you can use the extra money to get your supplies for your next new project. Free cross stitch patterns are everywhere - now go get looking!
