Finding the Right Addiction Treatment Center

By: David T.

When my seventeen year old son developed a serious drug and alcohol abuse problem, I wasn't ready to admit to myself that he was addicted. I was so sure that his issues with the substances had more to do with the friends he was hanging out with and the activities he was engaging in. I enrolled him in a drug rehab program that was basically set up as bi-weekly group therapy to discuss everything from the stressors of daily life to the actual use of drugs. He always seemed to come home from those meetings angry and sullen, although I could never figure out why. He seemed to think that it just really wasn't worth his time to be there- he kept telling me that he was different than those kids.

I wanted to think that he was different from those at the drug rehab center, but unfortunately, I was quite wrong about the way in which he was different. My son desperately needed drug rehab treatment, and what he was getting just wasn't working for him. I consternated long and hard about what to do- I knew that he needed to find something that worked for him and I wanted to find a substance abuse treatment center that would cater to his needs and provide more support for him. After speaking to a few local therapists and the like, I knew that a residential addiction treatment center was the answer.

I started calling around to different programs and doing my research online and what I learned was really encouraging. It seems that the longer a teenager or young adult stays in a residential treatment program, the higher the success rate. I knew upon seeing that figure, that not only did I want to find a long term (six months to a year) program for him, but I wanted it to be in another city, maybe even another state. A fresh start, away from his old hangouts and friends where he could really reinvent himself. I was thrilled to find Sober College in California.

Here's the great part: if I sent him there, he could get his GED during treatment, and even continue on with his education in terms of getting college credit. He'll live in a same-sex residential house with family-style meals and I just know that his being constantly surrounded with people of a like mind (not to mention all the professionals) will make a huge difference in his ability to get clean. I feel a little more at peace knowing that he's going to have a really good chance at getting his life back together, substance-free.
