A Federal student loan is the best advance you can obtain when you are going to college. It can also be the hardest for some to obtain. This type of advance is based on need. The FASFA report you filled out from your financial aid office is going to determine the type of need you have. If you are applying independently on the basis of your parents tax returns you will find that more financial aid is offered usually. How A Federal student loan can be arranged when you are a dependent? When you are a dependent the government believes you are going to have help from your parents and determine the amount of need from that. This has been a considerable problem for some scholars as their parents will not help them or they just don’t have the actual resources to help them despite the financial aid report. It is a black and white report where they calculate all your income and assets even those that are not liquid assets. When you are a dependent they do consider how many children in one family are of college age so that they can benefit. You can only be awarded a certain amount of money per year. This means that overall you can only borrow up to $23,000 for the entire undergraduate program. They base the need for financial aid on a four year program which means that year one is going to have a lower amount than the last year as they know tuition increases for the higher level classes. You can also find financial aid through federal student loans for graduate degree programs where you will have a different limit, but the same idea applies. The interest rate for these types of advances is typically between 2% and 4% although it may increase in the years to come depending on the market. Keep in mind it is always going to be lower than the alternative advances.
