Do you know why Dental Implants Fails?

By: Jessica Thomson

Let's first discuss what a dental implant is. It is basically an artificial tooth which is used as replacement to the original tooth in the practice of prosthetic dentistry. The artificial tooth or teeth are used as replacements for the damaged or lost tooth or a group of teeth. The most successful and accepted method of the different types of dental implants is known as the Osseo integrated implant. There are other methods which are alternates to the dental implant procedure and are called implant supported dentures or implant supported bridges. The success of the dental implant depends on the most part to the oral hygiene of the patient, the skill and experience of the dentist, and the amount of bone and its quality which is available at the site. A number of studies have been carried out in the last five years which have stated that the success rate of Dental Implants ranges between ninety to ninety five percent. This rate decreases in the case of those patients who are smokers.
There are a number of reasons why dental implants fail, and these reasons can be either direct or indirect. The reason which is often the case is the failure to correctly Osseo integrate. The implant is declared to have been failed if the implant is lost, becomes mobile, or shows a bone loss more than one millimeter after the implant is carried out. This amount is only for the first year, and goes to greater than 0.2 millimeters after the first year. The dental implant does not suffer with something called dental caries, but it can become victim to a condition called peri implantitis, which is a periodontal condition. The reason for this condition can either be the failure to follow proper oral hygiene procedures by the patient, or an infection which had been brought in during surgery. The failure in the end happens after there is bone loss or recession when the bone surrounding the dental implant becomes inflamed.
The rate of the risk of failure is considerably higher in those people who smoke as compared to those who do not smoke. Due to this reason it is usually the case that dental implants are placed on patients who smoke only when they have stopped smoking. The treatment is very costly and it would be very foolish to carry it out when the patient is still smoking.
