The implant is declared to have been failed if the implant is lost, becomes mobile, or shows a bone loss more than one millimeter after the implant is carried out. The dental implant does not suffer with something called dental caries, but it can become victim to a condition called peri implantitis, which is a periodontal condition. The reason for this condition can either be the failure to follow proper oral hygiene procedures by the patient, or an infection which had been brought in during surgery. The failure in the end happens after there is bone loss or recession when the bone surrounding the dental implant becomes inflamed.
The rate of the risk of failure is considerably higher in those people who smoke as compared to those who do not smoke. Due to this reason it is usually the case that dental implants are placed on patients who smoke only when they have stopped smoking. The treatment is very costly and it would be very foolish to carry it out when the patient is still smoking.
