Creating Your Own Software

By: Jeffrey A Solochek

Have you ever been working in a particular application and say to yourself “I wish this software could do this or that?” I have said this so many times I stopped counting. Nowadays I write all the things I would like to see down in a notepad. I then head over to Sourceforge and see if there is anything that is close to having the features that I am looking for. I may also do a search and see if there are any utilities out there that can do what I want.

When you find some program at a site like Sourceforge you can take this software and hire a programmer to modify it, adding the features that you want. Now hiring a programmer in the United States or certain parts of Europe could be quite expensive unless you can find somebody who will modify the code and wait for you to resell the product before they earn their payment. Situations like this are coming up all the time but one of the more reasonable solutions would be to go to a site like Elance and post a help wanted ad, an ad for bids. In the ad list in as much detail as possible the features you want.

If you found something on Sourceforge that can just have features added this would be the best scenario. A programmer in India or the Ukraine migh only charge maybe a hundred dollars or so to modify the software that you found. Do not say to yourself “Somebody else probably is thinking the same thing so I will just let them create it”. If Bill Gates had thought that way then there would be no Microsoft today and he would probably be working a blue collar job like so many other people.

The purpose of the software found on sites like Sourceforge are for just this. Software that you can either use as is or modify. If you do a search using one of the search engines for “coders, freelance, and job boards” then you will see that there are a lot of sites that you have to choose from. If you aren’t a marketer you can always make a proposal to one by searching on almost any subject on the Net.

It all starts with just writing down your thoughts and a little brainstorming. This is not just for older people but people of all ages. I’ve seen software that kids were the ones that originally came up with the ideas for and today those kids are making a lot of money. You are no longer bound to just the city where you live. Because of the internet you can talk to people all over the entire world. Someday we may even be able to talk with peoples on other planet other than Earth. The possiblities are endless.

Hell if you wanted to you could probably put an ad for some software on Ebay and make some good money. You also have Yahoo classifieds and I think even Google offers this these days. Read magazine articles on other people who have done exactly what we are talking about or visit your local library as I am sure they have books about these people.
