Chickenpox – general information

In many cases chickenpox develops in childhood. It is known that there are rare cases those of persons that have not caught the virus at an early age. That is why it was concluded that at the age they are pregnant the women are immune to the chickenpox virus. Chickenpox can develop complications for adults that get infected with the varicella-zoster virus. More than that, pregnant women should be careful because chickenpox might cause unwanted complications for them and their babies.

The advice for the adults that catch the chickenpox virus and especially for pregnant women is to see quickly a doctor and to seek for immunoglobulin treatment.

Many of you might wonder what chickenpox is. It is good to know that chickenpox is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. By the time you get chickenpox your immune system produces antibodies that make you immune to these viruses for the rest of your life.

Even after you are cured the virus will remain dormant in your body and in some rare cases it might reappear later in another form called shingles.

Chickenpox is a problem that is specific to childhood. Most of the people develop it in that period. Even so there are known some cases of adults that got infected. The complications are more common in adults especially when the affected person is a pregnant woman.

It is also known that chickenpox is a very infectious condition. The virus spreads by air from person to person. If you haven’t developed chickenpox yet you might have a chance of developing it if you are sharing the same room with an infected person or if you have any kind of contact with someone with chickenpox.

Chickenpox is an infection that becomes contagious within 2 to 4 days before the first rash occurs and it will last until all the spots have crusted. Shingles is the consequence of the same infection and occur usually in a long period of time after the chickenpox was healed. The difference between chickenpox and shingles is the time of occurrence and the areas they affect. Usually shingles occur on the chest or abdomen.

As a positive thing about the shingles infected persons we might say that you are not likely to catch chickenpox because their rash is covered.

A useful advice for pregnant women is to see a doctor. he will be able to prescribe you something that might help.
