CDL Schools Are Your Fast Start To A Truck Driving Career!

By: Nat Bronson

The Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 made it mandatory for truck drivers to have a commercial driver's license (CDL) in order to operate either heavy vehicles (over 26,000 lbs) or those carrying materials that are harmful to the health. This was done with a view to ensure the road safety standards are followed. You need to pass written and road tests to get the CDL, which are not easy. Therefore, CDL schools help you to get a CDL. However, not all CDL schools are the right choices, so you need to know how to make the right choice.

Currently, a truck driver can earn $35,000 annually based on a survey conducted by the American Truckers Association. Trucks represent the backbone of the distribution industry of goods, and the demand for competent truck drivers are projected to increase in the next few years. An estimated 8 million truck drivers have benefited from CDL schools today.

CDL schools are of three types: private trucking schools, community college-based vocational programs, and company-sponsored truck driver training programs. Any of these CDL schools are designed to provide skills and technical training based on the minimum requirements of the state and federal government, including any variations in the rules and regulations governing truck drivers.

Whatever type of CDL schools being offered in the vicinity, a good source of information and guidance in selecting a good school is the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office which will typically have a list of approved CDL schools. A good rule of thumb even without the help of the DMV are to look for CDL schools which programs certified by the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI).

Certified programs are designed to address the minimum requirements for a CDL, including the minimum training hours. If there is a prospective employer waiting in the background it will be best to enroll in a CDL school approved by the employer to ensure acceptability of the training.

Trusted CDL schools provide besides the necessary of training and theoretical knowledge that can help anyone pass the CDL tests, also knowledge about rules, manners in driving, safety procedures, maintenance skills. The programs are designed for the student to be placed in similar conditions to those that can be met on the roads; the instructors will be able to measure and improve your decisional aspects and reactions.

After all, operating large vehicles (truck tractor-trailers and buses) is not an easy task and being a truck driver is tough. Since, trucks are the main means of transportation in business, so they are generally on the move at a stretch. Thus, you not only need the skill to drive but the ability to be able to drive under stress. Hence, a CDL school should be able to prepare you for the tough life ahead. As, they say it is not the machine, but the man behind it.

There are a lot of aspects in driving such a large vehicle and only one of them is parking then. As they are more difficult to manage the driver gets himself in stressful situations and it is very important to keep his cool. Even though there are lots of rules and regulations that follow safety on the roads, at last the one that is critical into maintaining this order is the driver.
