Bookshelves and Bookcases-where to put the books

By: Jessica Thomson

If you are an avid reader and have a reasonably huge collection of books, then having an attractive and innovative bookshelf is quite natural. Truly your beloved books should get the treatment they deserve. If the bookcase or bookshelf you presently have is old and you want to change it or you are plain bored with it and would like a change, then there are plenty of designs and options to choose from. You could also custom make a bookshelf or bookcase to suit your style and taste. Some dealers have designs and variations of their own and you could also select a bookshelf, 'off the shelf'.
Here are a few designs you could consider:
Bookshelf built with books This bookshelf is actually made with books. The shelves and sides are made of wood and are covered with the cover pages of books. You can take the covers off old books and paste them on the sides and shelves of the bookshelf/bookcase.
Adjustable Bookshelf This type of bookshelf is very versatile and is suitable either for the home, office or large library. You can arrange it in such a way that it has the number of shelves that you desire and the manner and design in which the shelves are arranged. Some dealers also build bookshelves to your specifications. Make enquiries in the local market or search online for dealers who custom make bookshelves/bookcases. Some even have software that can help design a unique bookshelf.
Stair bookshelf If you live in an apartment that has stairs going to another floor then you could use the space on the wall by the side of the stairs to make a bookshelf for yourself. This looks quite innovative and also saves/uses space optimally.
Bookshelf Wall This is an idea of oriental origin. A partition or a wall dividing two rooms can be obtained by making an appropriately designed bookshelf. It is ideal to have such a bookshelf in the bedroom.
Bookshelf Door This one's straight out of the movies. It serves a similar purpose as the bookshelf wall. It blends with the furniture and décor of the house and also saves space.
Rafter Bookshelves This idea too has great utility value. If you live in a small flat and are hard pressed for space this really serves two purposes. A place for your books and also saving you space.
