Binaural Sound Healing Music: Sound Therapy

By: Alvin Harrigan

Binaural sound healing is a process whereby a person listens to two separate frequencies in a musical piece, each delivered into one earpiece (one right, one left) of the headphones used for listening. The frequencies harmonize perfectly with the key of the piece they are listening to, and the brain sorts out the type of frequency. Unconsciously they are sorted into alpha waves, delta waves, or theta waves, respectively. This procedure works because the two hemispheres of the brain become connected via the corpus callosum, the connecting structure between the two halves.
One aspect of sound therapy is called binaural sound healing music. This therapy is used to help people with sleep disorders, or to allow people to reach states of altered consciousness. Binaural sound healing music allows people to feel more creative because the therapy helps them feel centered and aware of themselves
The field of sound therapy, however, is not limited solely to the implementation of binaural sound healing music. It encompasses many other techniques, including massage therapy, voice healing, tuning fork treatments, and crystal bowl massage. The emphasis of this therapy is on healing, remaining healthy, increasing awareness, and connecting with one's spiritual self. Sources for these techniques include the ancient cultures of Egypt, India, China, and Japan.
An amalgamation of binaural sound healing music and light therapy can also be used. According to a belief held by some healers who follow the Eastern traditions of meditation, individuals will be drawn to certain colors at particular times because of the colors connection with the angels of healing that the individual is in need of at that specific time. They theorize that the color the person is drawn to is the most beneficial in relation to the healing and nourishing the individual is in need of.
If we turn to religions favored in India, stories include magical figures who offer seven levels of physical repair through different hues. The service is effective whether viewed, or directly applied via filters. Seven individual regions, also identified as spaces of body repair can be located according to these beliefs. (340)
There is a vast array of recorded audiotapes available for purchase to assist individuals in the natural healing of the body, from very minor conditions to serious illnesses. These tapes are most useful for the more advanced practitioner of transcendental meditation, as the ability to visualize entering the courtyard and rooms of the temple of healing is needed.
