The first time you meet someone on the Internet, you need to exercise a degree of caution, especially when giving out your personal phone number is concerned. Someone unscrupulous can easily use your phone number for illegal purposes. Make sure you verify who you are communicating with and ensure that they are both honest and trustworthy, and that they are not out to take advantage of you. Be wary of phone scams when you are using an online dating service. The most common scam is when a person asks you to call them and then you discover you've been billed for several hundred dollars because they masked the number and you've actually dialed a nine hundred number unwittingly. So should you call a person you've met online? Yes, of course. You must have some faith and take a chance or you might never find the right person. You can't be a hermit forever. When you do decide to call someone, there are ways to keep your phone number safe. You can call on a cell phone or use a phone service. A pay phone and a calling card work well or you can put a block on your regular phone to keep the number private. Ultimately, a pay phone is best for remaining anonymous and ensures you won't get a huge bill later. You can also use an internet calling service to communicate. It's another protective layer in your conversation. For extra security, you could use a disposable cell phone with prepaid minutes. This allows you to remain anonymous and untraceable. You can always share your personal number later when you feel more secure in the relationship. We all have a right to protect ourselves from scams in the online dating community.
