Adding Sound To Your Halloween Events

By: Roberto Bell

If you are looking to create the ultimate atmosphere for your Halloween event, then one way to do this is through sound. On a dark night, sound can offer just enough suggestion of the spooky and supernatural to add the finishing touch to your Halloween display. Sounds will leave youngsters who come to trick-or-treat wondering if your house might really be haunted, and will have party goers feeling like they are really at Dracula's castle for Halloween.

Finding the right sound

The first thing to get started with your Halloween soundtrack is to find the right sound. You can often find inexpensive Halloween sounds CDs and tapes at your local retailers. They might included sounds like screams, cackles, wolves howling, doors creaking, moaning, and other noises. These types of sound effect tapes have been around for years, so you should have no problem finding them at your favorite Halloween retailer or even online. Some may even include the voices of Halloween movie characters. If you prefer, you can easily create your own mix recording by downloading your favorite sound effects from online. Use your imagination, and look for sounds that go along with the theme of your Halloween party or display.

Setting up

Once you have determined what your ideal Halloween sound is, you will want to figure out how to set it up so that it works to your advantage. A surround system outdoors can work wonders to create the perfect spooky effects in your haunted graveyard or other creepy Halloween scene. Place the speakers at different areas so that the sounds seem to be coming from all around. Make sure that you keep speakers hidden for the best effects. The more speakers that you hook up, the more varied the noises will be, and the more reactions you will get from your visitors.

Make your own noise

If you want to get creative and make your own tape, but can't find the sounds that you need online, consider doing the recordings yourself. Record your neighbor's dog barking viciously. Practice your creepiest moans and screams. Slam doors and bang things around to find your perfect sound effects. Get creative and experiment with a few different ideas until you find exactly what you want.

Going beyond noise

While wailing ghosts and demonic screams and cackles might work great for your haunted house or gruesome graveyard, it might not be quite the right thing for your Halloween party. Remember that your mix tape does not have to be limited to creepy sounds. You can also record your own favorite Halloween music as well. Perennial favorites include songs like “Monster Mash” and the theme song from “The Adams Family” but you can choose whatever music you like best. Your favorite horror movies may have some good ideas.

Adding sound to your Halloween display is just one way that you can complete the overall spooky feel. Sounds make everything that more realistic, and cause visitors to imagine their own spooks – which are often spookier than anything you could devise on your own.
