It can be difficult to know how to make your wedding different, so that your guests will remember it as distinct from the others they have attended. The way to achieve this is to hire a magician. Magic will give a focus to your wedding reception, fill all the waiting-around times with sparkle and break the ice between people who don't know each other.
It's a rare person who doesn't enjoy watching the impossible unfold right in front of their eyes, and the sense of wonder and joy magic creates is completely in keeping with how a wedding day should feel.
While we were greatly looking forward to getting married, my fianc and I were concerned about how our families would get on at the wedding. The magician we'd booked was a huge help. His extraordinary feats made us all feel like children again, wide-eyed with astonishment, and the barriers came down.
The magician at my sister's wedding gave them a lovely memento. Anna picked a card and wrote her name across it and her new husband did the same. When the magic words were spoken, their two cards merged into one and became a card with two faces, her signature on one side and his on the other. It's now in a double-sided frame, hanging in their kitchen like a mobile.
My brother went to a wedding where he knew only the bridegroom. All the other guests seemed to know each other and Danny felt lonely and shy. During the reception, he was just looking for the hotel's telly lounge, thinking to watch the football, when a magician appeared from nowhere and showed him some tricks. When the magician moved to a group standing nearby, he took Danny with him and got him involved.
My cousin's day could have been spoilt by a mistake the hotel had made, which resulted in the wedding breakfast being served a good two hours late. However, because they had a magician (at my suggestion, I'm proud to say), I believe very few people noticed the delay - we were all too absorbed by the magic.
Weddings can be difficult for teenagers, who are too old to play with the children or be entertained by whatever the little ones are doing, yet are often too young to be interested in adult conversation. My friend's son, Nathan, had this experience at our wedding and was saved by the magician, who taught him a couple of simple tricks and very kindly gave him a pack of cards. This kept Nathan busy for the rest of the day - and, in fact, for months afterwards.
When booking your magician, don't just go for the cheapest. You don't want to end up with someone's Uncle Derek who knows a few tricks. You want a smooth, sophisticated magician who will get on well with everybody and perform the sort of magic that will make people gasp, not groan. Although there are many capable magicians who are not in it, membership of The Magic Circle is a good indication of a magician's skill.
