A Guide To The Danger Of Scuba Diving

By: James T Catrell

Relatively speaking scuba diving is quite a safe undertaking providing you follow a common set of safety rules or standards. It is when these rules are violated that folks put themselves, and others, in danger.

We can start off by examining some of the most frequent errors that novice divers make that puts them in a dangerous situation. By doing this I think we can then put some sort of proper perspective on the danegrs of scuba diving and in doing so alter any misperceptions that people may have about the sport.

Failure To Seek The Proper Certification.

Genrally speaking it is not possible to rent out or buy scuba diving gear without giving evidence of some sort of diver certification status. Whether it be a beginner, intermediate or advanced status. What does tend to happen though is that someone will rent or buy equipment and give it to an uncertified "diver".

We have seen this kind of irresponsible activity increase due to the auction websites that have spread over the world wide web. This kind of thing is a poor reflection of what the scuba community does not want as we need our sport to work within a strongly regulated framework to avoid any bad publicity from accidents caused by this sort of thing.

Scuba Diving And Limited Skill Sets.

There are some dives of a specialist nature that require experience in these areas. Ice diving, wreck penetration, shark diving and canern diving fit into this category.

Those who attempt these types of dives without proper training have suffered the ultimate penalty for their inexperience. This is a shame as $300 and a weekend of training would have saved their lives.

The Danger of Scuba Diving And Alcohol.

It is fair to say that most divers, no matter what status they are, dive in a responsible and safe manner. However there are some complete idiots who ignore some basic safety rules and attempt to dive whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs or even both.

This is, of course, an incredibly dangerous practice and has led to a number of fatalities. As such, it is critical not to dive while under the influence of any addictive substances.

Scuba Diving And Poor Conditioning.

It is something that can be quite difficult to talk about but mishaps and fatalities sometimes happen because the people involved are morbidly obese or who smoke and are also morbidly obese. Statistically people in this category can suffer cardiac arrests whilst diving.

Virtually all these areas of increased danger could have been modified, but the neglect on the part of the diver was the impetus for the dangers that resulted. The moral of the story is thus obvious.
