A Combined Approach Is Needed For Effective Natural Weight Loss

By: Dr. George Best

Despite the advertising hype, there really is no supplement or natural weight loss aid that negates the need for diet and exercise. The reality is that a combination of improved diet, appropriate physical exercise, and perhaps certain weight loss aids that assist with specific individual needs is the most likely way to achieve lasting weight control.

A great variety of natural weight loss products are always being promoted, and there seems like an unending stream of new weight loss aids being hyped. The ads promise easy weight loss and people desperately want to believe that it is possible, so they buy the latest product hoping it will be the easy answer they've been seeking. Despite the fact that most people are aware deep down that there really is no quick, easy way to lose weight, they'll buy each new weight loss miracle that comes out on the market with excitement, only to be discouraged repeatedly.

Not all natural weight loss products are bad. The truth is, quite a number of them actually do have the effects they are promoted as having. One example of this is the much touted hoodia. Hoodia, at least real hoodia (some products contain little to none of the actual plant) is documented to suppress appetite quite effectively. The problem is that very few people overeat or eat too much of the wrong foods because they are actually hungry. People will overeat because it's something to do, or because it serves some emotional need, but rarely do they overeat because of actual hunger. So unless you happen to have a problem with excesive hunger, an appetite suppressant like hoodia probably won't do much for you.

Certain natural weight loss aids can help improve the weight loss results you get from diet and exercise. The thing is, to get benefits from such products, you hav to do the diet and exercise, but many people buy these products in the hope that they will replace diet and exercise, and they simply do not work this way.

Some natural weight loss aids block the absorption of fat by the digestive tract and thereby lower the calories you absorb from each meal. While this does tend to help with weight loss, unless you stop eating everything except fat (which is not a good idea), you still are taking in other calories that, in excess, will be converted to fat AFTER they are absorbed from the digestive tract. Here again a consistent diet and exercise program is needed to get maximum effects.

No natural weight loss product is a replacement for diet and exercise. While some products may enhance the effects of diet and exercise, such enhancements are minor in comparison to what proper eating and increased activity can do. Even the advertisements for weight loss products usually are clear on this point - at least they're clear if you have sharp enough vision to see the disclaimers hidden in the tiny print usually located at the bottom of the ads.

Diet and exercise are the key components of an effective natural weight loss plan. Certain weight loss products may be of assistance as enhancements to what you are doing with diet and exercise, but you need to choose such products carefully with regards to how their effects match your specific needs. For example, if you aren't overeating due to real hunger, don't bother with a product to decrease your appetite.

Once you have your natural weight loss plan figured out in terms of your eating plan, your exercise routine, and your choice of weight loss products, there's just one thing that needs to be done. You need to be able to stay on the program consistently over the long-term! The number one problem with most weight loss plans is that people don't stick to the plan consistently long enough to get lasting results.

It has been my experience that very few people stick to a natural weight loss program consistently for more than two weeks at a time. Sure, some of them may "try to lose weight" for months at a time, but they cheat so often and they are so inconsistent with their efforts, they fail to make any real progress.

Current research indicates that most diet plans have about the same success rate. In other words, low fat works as well as low carb, which works as well as eating for your blood type, etc.. Researchers found that the primary factor that determined whether or not a diet was successful was whether or not the individual actually followed the program!

Since sticking with a natural weight loss plan is the key to success, it would likely be beneficial to investigate various methods for getting control of your mind and emotions. I include several of the most effective of these techniques in my E-Book, "Training Your Brain For Weight Loss". Other resources include Anthony Robbins, Dr. Phil McGraw, Emotional Freedom Technique, Neurolinguistic Programming, and self-hypnosis.

Ultimately, the key to succeeding with a natural weight loss plan is to take a combination approach that includes diet, exercise, any weight loss products that meet your specific needs, and make your program a part of your daily lifestyle. The way to be make your program something you consistently stick with long-term is to take control of your mind and emotions so that your brain works with rather than against your weight loss efforts.
