A Building Program That Glorifies God

By: Bob McNelly

Before starting your building program answer these four questions.

1. Will our building expansion Glorify God?

You might answer yes to this questions if you believe your church is running out of room or because of the growth of your church, but will God be glorified with this building program at this time, with this pastor and church?

Before you start your building program be sure you sit down and count the cost (Luke 14:28). Figure out if you have the money, time, staff and leadership for the job.

With your already busy schedule, realize that you are going to have time taken away from your family, prayer and study.

2. What is the purpose behind your building program?

Determine the purpose behind your building program. Whether it's a new building, a renovation or remodeling make sure it's not because of ego or leadership driven, but Spirit led.

Davids son, Solomon built a magnificent temple for the Lord, but failed miserably in his spiritual life.

3. Is the building program included in our mission statement?

To answer this you must have a mission statement that is in writing and your people must know what that mission statement is. From there you will need to fervently pray and fast seeking the Lord's will and clear direction.

Nehemiah had a major building project that he wanted to accomplish but did not move forward until after he fasted and mourned for four months seeking God's clear direction.

4. Do we absolutely need this building program?

You might be saying that your sanctuary is full, or we can't grow if we don't build. Have you considered any alternatives? Such as going to two services or relocating to a gymnasium.

Possibly your true need is just more classroom space. Adult classes could meet in a large room and be at round tables for each class which could free up classrooms for other ages.

Has God given you the go ahead to start your building program through prayer and fasting? Then continue in confidence in Him.

If the Lord has led you to move forward then "Let all things be done decently and in order". Let us instruct and assist you in what should be an enriching and exciting opportunity in the life of your church.
