The cards slide across the surface of the poker table like a hockey puck on ice (Okay, so I like hockey, so what? :). You look at your hole cards and see Ace Ten off suit. You ask yourself "What now?". You end up calling an UTG raise from the small blind.
The flop comes down A 2 6 rainbow and you end up losing half your stack to Ace King. He had you dominated the whole way, blargh! You shrug it off as unfortunate and keep on going.
Was it your fault or the cards? I would say that in a situation like this it is most often the players own fault. He made a simple texas holdem strategy mistake. No sweat though, it is through our mistakes that we learn.
Texas Holdem strategy doesn't have to be hard. The hands that evade the TV cameras are usually the more important ones (strategically). These hands aren't shown on TV because it is too boring to watch for the average joe.
Here is My Texas Holdem Strategy List:
1. Play Tight - Play super tight out of position. By out of position I mean anything that isn't the button or one off the button (a.k.a the cut-off). You should play the tightest from the blinds because those positions are truly worthless. You do not have to defend your blinds in a game like No-Limit Texas Holdem. I have had many students and friends who have tightened up considerably from the blinds and started winning more with less losing days.
2. The Future - Is important to any good No-Limit Hold'em player. It is a vital component of any good players texas holdem strategy. You have to think about the future, how will the hand play itself? An example would be if you called a raise out of position with a hand like K9o. You will have an extremely hard time knowing if your hand is good if you flop anything. That's a good example of where you should fold because when you think about future streets you see that it will just be trouble. You will have a hard time winning much and a spectacularly easy time losing money.
3. Steam Control - If you regularly donate money to players by steaming, then you will have a hard time being a winning player. You will have to learn how you steam. Spot the signs before you start steaming and learn to quit the game. This will save you a lot of money in the long-run.
4. Table Select - It is vital for your success to sit at the best tables. Sit at the Texas Holdem table(s) where you think you have the biggest edge over your opponents. This is a simple yet crucial Texas Holdem strategy tip.
5. Money Management - You should keep at least 20 buy-ins for the level you are playing. So if you're playing $200 NLHE then you should have $4,000 MINIMUM. And if you drop below say $3,000 you should move down to $100 NLHE until you have $4,000 again. I know it doesn't sound fun but if you do not want to go broke then you have to learn proper money management.
6. Use Everything - I know many mediocre poker players who have some kind of block. They refuse to take coaching or discuss hands, because they are afraid to show their weaknesses. Well what the ... ? How can you improve if you do not talk about your mistakes? I myself try to embrace my mistakes because they are the things that will make my texas holdem game good! Don't avoid discussion and coaching, please. If you do then your odds of ever becoming a good poker player go way down.
7. Keep It Fun - All the texas holdem strategy tips lose their meaning if you are not having fun while doing it. Do whatever it takes to keep the game fun. Maybe you shouldn't try becoming a professional poker player. You might enjoy playing semi-professionally or maybe just having fun with it. If you have fun then it is all good!
