Firefox is the new browser from the Mozilla Foundation, which was built to carefully support the many standards given by the W3C Consortium (in charge of defining a common way to display web pages, so they display the same in different browsers) while being designed with security in mind.
Also, the security of Firefox is much better than other browsers because it was designed to be secure since its inception. Instead to creating a "bloated" product with a lot of features, they thought it was better that features could be added by users and created a mechanism called "plugins", which are created by third parties and add the functionality that users demand.
Here are the top 5 reasons why you should be using Firefox:
1. Microsoft seems to have a wicked plan. Internet Explorer added many features that weren't in the standards specification of the W3C consortium. When web developers began using those "features", web pages started to look bad in browsers that don't support those non-standard "features". Average users thought that Internet Explorer was the best browser because of this.
2. Improvement doesn't stop when they win. When Internet Explorer began his life in 1,995 nobody expected that it would threat the dominant position of Netcape, which had more than 90% market share. Microsoft worked very hard on Explorer, adding more and more features (and creating serious security risks because of the very fast developments) every year and suddenly, all developments stopped in 2,001 with Internet Explorer 6.0, till recently. This shows that Microsoft only moves when they are at risk.
3. Proven Security. When the US Computer Emergency and Response Team (CERT) recommends that you should be using any browser other than Internet Explorer, certainly you should listen. In this article: http://www.securityfocus.com/news/8998 they warn people about the security problems of Internet Explorer. Firefox was developed with security in mind, so it is much less vulnerable.
4. Commitment. The Mozilla Foundation is constantly developing never programs and solutions for users, regardless of market share or earning because all their products are free. They created Thunderbird (to read email), NVU (a web page editor) and many other useful programs.
5. Totally Free. The Mozilla Foundation develops all their software in the open source model, meaning that anybody can see the source and change it to their own needs. This helps in the creation of a much secure product because more eyes are looking into the possible problems.
While all this reasons are important, you should be using Firefox primarily because it is more secure and provides a better browsing experience than Internet Explorer. Maybe Microsoft will redesign or rewrite completely Internet Explorer in some future to be a more stable, but you can wait or start using a superior product that gets better every day, immediately. Download Firefox and feel the difference now.
