10 guaranteed ways to destroy your website

By: Tony Hetherington..

A lively website can be a powerful lead generation tool that can capture the interest of prospective customers but only if you adopt good website practice. Unfortunately, far too many website owners seem to adopt one or more of the following really dumb ways to operate, promote and design a website. How many of them are you guilty of?

1. Bought traffic - This is the number one dumb way to waste money launching a website. The idea that you can buy tens of thousands of website visitors is just pure nonsense. Hey, don't worry we've all fallen for this quick fix and all had the same lousy results. Zero opt-ins and zero sales. If any real visitors actually get delivered, and I suspect many are just simple scams, and then there is no way that this will actually ever work. Think about it. It's like rounding people up at random, forcing them onto a bus and driving them to your store. Are they really going to buy? Nope, not a chance.

2. The bargain scam - Improve Google rankings for $xxx - If these scams actually worked then they would be a lot more expensive! That's the hard truth that we all know but we seem to turn our brains off and fall for what seems to be the easy option. If they are remotely genuine then they can do some SEO work and charge you twice the price.

3. All links are good links - All links are not good links and you should resist the temptation to rush around and collect as many links as you humanly can get. The problem is that search engines such as Google love relevant content and if your links lead to irrelevant content you will suffer. This may lead to increased fees for Adwords advertising or even get you dumped out of the Google listings.

4. No plan - "People don't plan to fail - they fail to plan". We all know this saying and we all know its true but when it comes to launching a website our brains somehow go offline and we leap into things without planning and then we wonder why they don't work. One reason why we don't plan is that we don't know how to plan properly and what the key elements are.

5. Repeat past mistakes - It is human nature to assume that if something didn't work then it is your fault. In the worst examples, this can lead people to be conned again and again. You buy traffic, it didn't work so you complain. If they're clever crooks they'll say hey was your website ready for the traffic or did you buy enough and you foolishly but inevitably place another order.

6. Spam scams - Ever seen those offers through which you can email 10 million people for $100? Sounds great right? Nope it sounds terrible. If it is actually genuine, and that's a big if, then you're going to spam 10 million people with your sales pitch. It only takes a tiny percentage of the 10 million to get a lot of complaints! If you don't like being spammed then don't spam others.

7. Black hat - Psst! Wanna know a secret, back door, sneaky, ninja way to get number 1 on Google today? Sure we all do and then we pay out good money for a so-called "black hat" technique. The only problem is the risk that comes with it. These black hat techniques can get your accounts closed, or your website banned.

8. Keywords: Do you use too many keywords? - Filling your pages with keywords is a clever and necessary idea but overdoing it with keywords can spell disaster for your keyword-driven website. When Google analyses a site it first strips out any common words such as "and" and "but". If you put in your keywords too many times then Google will mistake them for these common words and delete them. Having all your keywords deleted is not a great idea.

9. Don't update website content - When was the last time that you updated your website with new fresh copy? If the answer is months or years ago then you are presenting a very bad image to your potential customers. It's like one of those shop or store windows that are dusty and uncared for with goods going stale and cobwebs all over them. That's not going to attract your customers in to buy is it?

10. Your site has no content - Your website has no content beyond the traditional pages of home, your products, about you, contact you. How would you view such a website? Yes, you'd look for a second, close the window and will have forgotten all about it within a few minutes. Is this what you want to happen with visitors to your site?

It is not too late to put these dumb and destructive ways behind you and get on the route to website success. Stop reacting in a panic and instead become committed to your online success.
